Biography | Mary Barra — The Poletown Plant She Took as Manager in 2003
kevin
People treat a Detroit assembly plant as a faceless box on a map between Hamtramck and the Packard ruins.
In 2003 this one became Mary Barra's first factory of her own.
The address is still 2500 East Grand Boulevard.
General Motors opened Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly here in 1985 on land taken for the so-called Poletown plant.
By the time she arrived the line had a reputation for troubled automation and about 3,400 people on the payroll.
The assignment was not ceremonial.
She was sent to launch two large cars, the Cadillac DTS and the Buick LeSabre, and to run the floor with UAW Local 22.
Contemporaneous accounts credit the year with quality awards and a safer shop, not a slogan.
She later named the job as one of the three she liked most in a thirty-year climb.
The next year she left for vehicle manufacturing engineering at the company level.
Do not expect the 2003 interiors to greet you.
GM halted the last combustion cars here in 2020 and rebuilt the site as Factory Zero, an electric-truck plant with battery assembly on the same 365 acres.
The visitor in 2026 sees Hummer EV and Silverado EV body shops, not a DTS final line.
The pin is the same lot.
The buildings are not the same rooms.
A plant manager's office is not a public tour stop.
This memory marks a published job on a documented industrial site, not a present desk and not a private house.
Barra is a living executive.
The year is 2003 because month and day were never issued in the company notice that survives in open sources.
