Biography|Henrik Holmberg — The Drottninggatan Institute Where He Took His Engineer’s Certificate

People who meet Skanska only as a modern contractor tend to start the file in 1984, when the name changed.

The first managing director of the firm that became Skanska started earlier, and farther north, on a Stockholm street that still holds the school.

Henrik Birger Emanuel Holmberg was born in Visby on 1 October 1852.

In 1874 he left Teknologiska institutet with an engineer’s certificate in road and water construction.

The institute, founded in 1825 and later renamed Kungliga Tekniska högskolan, had moved into this block at Drottninggatan 95 in 1863.

Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander dressed the three-storey brick range in a Neo-Renaissance front that Sweden then copied for other school buildings.

The same pile still stands. It is no longer KTH. The Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry uses it, and the state has listed the main building as a byggnadsminne.

What Holmberg took from these rooms was a narrow, practical licence: harbours, water, roads.

He used it first on harbour works at Helsingborg and Varberg, then on the military course that admitted him to Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren in 1886.

The certificate is the hinge. Without it he does not become the civilian engineer Malmö later hired to run a city’s public works, and he does not sit as disponent of a new cement-casting firm on the Öresund.

Stand on Drottninggatan and the story is still legible in brick. The classrooms have changed tenants. The decision that sent a Gotlander into Swedish infrastructure was taken behind this façade.
