(500) Days of Summer|Point Fermin Lighthouse — the wedding on the cliff
kevin
Day 402. Tom takes a train out to a wedding he was invited to by a woman who broke his heart, dances with her, drinks too much, catches the bouquet, and leaves with an invitation to a rooftop party where he will learn she is engaged. The wedding is filmed on the grass above the water at Point Fermin, at the very southern tip of San Pedro where the Los Angeles coast runs out of land.
The white Victorian at the centre of the park is the Point Fermin Lighthouse, built in 1874 from redwood shipped down from Northern California, with a lamp room framed by East Coast stick-style carpentry that looks transplanted from a New England seafront. Its light was extinguished the week after Pearl Harbor and never fully returned to service. The Coast Guard left, the building nearly rotted away, and volunteers and the city brought it back.
The park around it is free and open daily, with lawns, palms, and a cliff edge that drops to the Pacific. The lighthouse itself is a museum with limited free tours a few days a week — check hours before you drive out, because the gate closes early. Come late afternoon; the sun sets straight down the channel past Catalina.
The location does something the script never says out loud. Tom's worst day happens in the prettiest place in the film — full sun, ocean air, everyone happy — because the movie is honest about how heartbreak actually arrives. Not in the rain. At someone else's wedding, on a beautiful afternoon.
