50 First Dates|Sea Life Park Hawaiʻi, Waimānalo — Henry's Office, Where the Walrus Works

Henry Roth is a marine veterinarian, and the tank he spends his working days beside is real. Sea Life Park sits at the foot of Makapuʻu, across the highway from the beach, with the Koʻolau cliffs going up behind it and the ocean going out in front — which is why the film could shoot there without ever making it look like a set. The walrus routine, the underwater gags, the scenes where Henry talks through his problems to an animal that will not answer: that is this park, at 41-202 Kalanianaʻole Highway.
It has been open since 1964, built on the shore where Makapuʻu Point drops into the sea. It is small. You can cross it in fifteen minutes if you walk fast, and the older enclosures show their age. What it has that no larger aquarium has is the setting: look up from the tank and the cliff is right there, look out and the two offshore islands sit on the horizon exactly as they do in the film's wider shots.
Check the hours before you drive out — they shift by season — and note that the walrus and dolphin encounters are booked separately and sell out. Parking is a paid lot.
Stand at the rail on the ocean side in the late afternoon, when the trade wind is coming straight in off Makapuʻu and the light goes gold on the cliff. That is the frame the film kept returning to, and it does not need a camera to work.
