50 First Dates|Heʻeia Kea Small Boat Harbor — The Slip Where a Man Lives on His Boat

Henry does not have an apartment. He has a boat, and a plan to sail it to Alaska to study walrus, and a habit of never staying anywhere long enough to be missed. The harbour where that boat sits is Heʻeia Kea, a small state marina on the Kāneʻohe side of the bay, reached down a short road off Kamehameha Highway.

It is a working harbour, not a marina in the yacht sense. Fishing charters and dive boats go out before six. There is a launch ramp, a pier you can walk to the end of, a snack bar that opens early and closes when it feels like it, and a car park full of trailers. Nobody will ask what you are doing there.

The reason to stand on that pier is what lies just north of it. Heʻeia Fishpond runs along the shore — a Hawaiian loko iʻa whose stone-and-coral wall encloses about eighty acres, built centuries before contact and still being repaired, rock by rock, by the community that manages it. From the pier you can trace the line of the wall against the shallows, with the Koʻolau range standing behind it.

Come at first light, when the charter crews are loading ice and the water inside the bay is still glass. Look out at the fishpond wall — a structure built by people who intended it to last, in a film about a man who intended nothing to. That contrast is sitting right there in the frame, and the movie never mentions it.
