Winter Sonata | Gapyeong Naru — Five Minutes to the Island That Changed the Map

People treat Nami Island as if you step straight onto the metasequoia path. You start on this quay. Gapyeong Naru sits at 1024 Bukhangangbyeon-ro, Gapyeong-eup. The regular ferry crosses the Bukhan River in about five minutes and lands you on an island that belongs, administratively, to Chuncheon. Tickets sold here include the boat. Parking lots one through four fill on weekends the way they have since the Japanese charter buses arrived in 2004. Winter Sonata did not invent the island. Cheongpyeong Dam isolated it in 1944. What the drama did was turn a short river crossing into the first mass Hallyu pilgrimage. From this dock you can still see the shape of the half-moon island before the trees take over. The zip-line tower to the north is later infrastructure. The boat is the original door. Stand on the pier before you board. The water is ordinary. The island on the far side is the reason a generation learned the word Hallyu as a place you could actually go.
