Reply 1988 | Yeoulmul Mural Village, Bupyeong — The Alleys That Were Already Real

Here is the thing nobody tells you before you plan a Reply 1988 trip: the alley does not exist. The Bonghwangdang lane, the raised wooden platform the mothers sit on, the five houses, the briquette shop, the photo studio — all of it was built from scratch on 5,292 square metres of a decommissioned army base in Nokyang-dong, Uijeongbu, behind a two-metre security wall, and it was slated for demolition the moment the show wrapped so the site could be given over to sports-complex expansion.

So the pilgrimage has to go to the places that were already real. Yeoulmul in Sipjeong-dong, Bupyeong, is the best of them — a hillside of low houses and narrow lanes, painted with murals, that supplied the ordinary alley footage the set could not. There is a stationery shop at the entrance of the kind that has almost vanished from Korea: pencils and snacks and a couple of arcade machines, the social centre of any 1980s childhood.

Two things to hold onto. This is a residential neighbourhood, not an attraction — people are hanging washing in the lanes you want to photograph. And no single lane is *the* lane; the coordinate here is neighbourhood-level, roughly ±300 m, because the drama used several and none is marked.

Walk it without looking for a specific frame. The set is gone and that turns out to be the honest ending — what Reply 1988 was actually about is not one alley in Ssangmun-dong but the fact that thousands of them looked like this, and a few, in Bupyeong, still do.
