The great gatehouse rises above the courtyard, the River Teith running below the walls. This is Castle Leoch, the seat of Clan MacKenzie, where Claire first arrives in the eighteenth century and meets Colum. The real Doune Castle needed almost no dressing. Its late-fourteenth-century stone, the cavernous kitchen fireplace, the great hall, and the battlements already carried the weight of a Highland stronghold. You can walk the same routes the characters took and stand on the walls looking out toward the hills. The place still feels like a living centre of power rather than a ruin.
