Biography | Steve Wozniak — The East Room Medal That Put His Engineering in the National Record

On 19 February 1985, Steve Wozniak entered the White House as one of the first recipients of the National Medal of Technology. The ceremony began at 1:33 p.m. in the East Room, where President Ronald Reagan and Commerce Secretary Malcolm Baldrige presented awards to fourteen Americans. The official record names Wozniak and Steve Jobs together for Apple Computer. That pairing mattered. Jobs had become the company’s public strategist and salesman, while Wozniak’s circuit designs had made the Apple I workable and the Apple II unusually accessible, expandable, and useful. The medal did not credit either man alone for the rise of personal computing. Its official citation recognized their development and introduction of the personal computer as a product that helped create a new industry and extended computer power to individual users. By 1985, that recognition had moved a story often told through garages and small electronics shops into a national ceremonial setting. The East Room also placed Apple’s achievement beside work in aviation, satellites, petroleum technology, computer systems, and other fields represented among the inaugural recipients. Wozniak had already stepped back from daily work at Apple after returning to the University of California, Berkeley, and pursuing projects such as the US Festival. The medal therefore marked more than a company milestone. It established his engineering contribution as part of the United States’ official technological record at a moment when personal computers were becoming ordinary tools rather than specialist machines.
