People treat Procter & Gamble as a downtown Cincinnati tower that always made Tide and Crest.
The partnership began as candles and soap. Ivorydale is where that shop became a plant.
William Procter, an English candlemaker, and James Gamble, an Irish soapmaker, had married sisters. Their father-in-law, Alexander Norris, told them they were bidding against each other for the same fat. They signed a partnership on 31 October 1837 and each put in US$3,596.47 in 1837 dollars.
The first office was at Sixth and Main, two blocks from the present headquarters. Cincinnati was a pork-packing town; lard and tallow were cheap. A larger brick works later faced the Miami and Erie Canal on Central Avenue, then called Western Row, between York and Dayton.
On 7 January 1884 fire wrecked that canal-side plant. The firm bought more than fifty acres next to St. Bernard, with rail on one side and Mill Creek on the other, and built what it named Ivorydale after Ivory soap.
Ivory soap had been sold since 1879. The plant that carried the name rose from about 1885. By the early twentieth century the complex held a food works for Crisco, its own fire station, and rows of gray process buildings along Spring Grove Avenue.
P&G sold most of the local manufacturing between 2002 and 2003. Bar-soap lines at Ivorydale passed to a contractor, later St. Bernard Soap Company, which closed in 2024. The corporate headquarters stayed downtown.
The pin is Ivorydale in St. Bernard, at the historic Spring Grove edge of the works, not a private house and not a furnace floor. The 1837 shop on Sixth and Main is gone under later commercial buildings.
