Concert History | Céline Dion at Civic Arena — A Faulty Rigging Clamp Forced an Eleven-Week Delay

When Céline Dion finally played Pittsburgh’s Civic Arena on November 29, 1998, the date carried a safety decision made about eleven weeks earlier.

The September 12 performance had been stopped during setup. A contemporary Pollstar report says the tour’s twelve-position load-cell system showed that one of its two-ton chain hoists had lost load. As the crew tried to rebalance the suspension, a venue-owned cable pulled out of clips at the roof and swung down to the arena floor. Head rigger Rick Mooney stressed that the loose cable belonged to the house system, not Dion’s touring equipment.

That distinction mattered because the arena rigging was expected to support roughly 90,000 pounds of the show’s sound and lighting equipment. The crew and promoter canceled rather than treat the abnormal reading as tolerable. Civic Arena general manager Hank Abate told Pollstar that the other clamps proved correctly installed, but the venue replaced the older Crosby clamps with stronger machine-welded clamps before Dion returned on November 29.

Promoter Rich Engler later remembered the incident more dramatically, describing the ceiling as beginning to collapse. The contemporary trade account is more specific: it identifies a faulty cable clamp and a house cable coming free, not a general roof collapse. Read together, the accounts show why this session belongs to the history of live production rather than celebrity: load monitoring exposed a weak point in a venue system, the show stopped, and the building changed before the audience was admitted.

**Coordinate method and precision.** The pin at 40.441740, -79.989780 uses the independently maintained [GeoNames record 5184394](https://www.geonames.org/5184394/civic-arena.html) and agrees within about twenty metres with [Wikidata’s Civic Arena coordinate](https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q1237181). The ±160-metre radius covers the demolished arena footprint and its roof, not an undocumented stage, hoist, or cable position. It does not mark PPG Paints Arena across Centre Avenue.
