Biography|Lee Yong-bae — The January Morning He Declared Emergency at the Changwon Works

On 15 January 2020 about three hundred Hyundai Rotem executives, team leaders and staff filled a hall at the Changwon works.

The plant is the company's registered head office, at 488 Changwon-daero in Seongsan-gu, Changwon.

Lee Yong-bae stood there as the incoming president.

Hyundai Motor Group had named him to the Rotem chair on 27 December 2019, moving him from Hyundai Motor Securities.

The legal change of representative director would not be filed until 25 March.

The January ceremony did not wait.

Rotem had lost money for years.

Korean business desks later put the two-year hole near 476 billion won and called the rail-and-defence affiliate the group's sore finger.

Lee told the hall that work would have to shift onto earlier controls and onto profit, not volume for its own sake.

An emergency management committee, with the president on it, was to watch asset sales, organisation and the order book.

The factory itself is a closed industrial site.

Rail cars and armoured vehicles leave through gates on Changwon-daero.

A visitor sees fence, chimneys and the industrial grid of Seongsan-gu, not a public gallery.

The speech is the moment that can be dated.

KBS Gyeongnam put the plant into that week's regional bulletin of emergency regimes in Changwon manufacturing.

Lee was still, on paper, a president-designate.

The people in the hall already treated him as the man who would close the loss.

By the end of 2020 the company had swung to an operating profit.

The January morning is where that turn was announced, on the factory floor that legally is Rotem's home.
