Biography | David Joyner — The Business School Building Where He Took a Finance Degree

The building at 15th Street and Flint Avenue on the Texas Tech campus is not, today, a business school.

It is the College of Media and Communication, remodeled and reopened in August 2012 after the business faculty moved northwest to a new hall.

In 1986 it was still the College of Business Administration, the name the school had carried since 1956.

J. David Joyner finished a Bachelor of Business Administration in finance here that year.

He was a member of Phi Delta Theta on the same campus.

The Rawls name that now sits on the college did not exist yet. Jerry S. Rawls, a 1967 mechanical-engineering alumnus, made the $25 million gift in December 2000; the college was formally renamed in 2001 and 2002.

The present Rawls building at 703 Flint Avenue opened for classes in spring 2012 on the site of the old Thompson and Gaston Halls.

So a visitor looking for Joyner's classrooms should not start at the glass LEED hall on the northwest gateway.

Start here, at the older complex the business school occupied while he was an undergraduate, the one that later became Media and Communication.

Texas Tech's own college history and the 2012 Lubbock Avalanche-Journal ribbon-cutting both place that handoff in those years.

Joyner's official CVS Health biography still lists the degree as coming from The Rawls College of Business, which is how the school styles itself now.

The degree itself is a 1986 B.B.A. in finance from the College of Business Administration.

He later joined the college's advisory council, a separate moment pinned at the newer building.

The 1986 building still stands at 3003 15th Street. The interiors were rebuilt; the site is the same block.
