Biography | Plato — The Olive Groves of the Academy, Outside the Dipylon

People treat Plato as a marble bust in a school corridor. The school was a grove. The Academy stood about a mile outside the Dipylon gate of Athens, in a walled precinct dedicated to the hero Akademos. Plato bought land there after returning from Sicily and taught from about 387 BC. Aristotle stayed twenty years. The site is now a public archaeological park in the modern quarter of Akadimia Platonos, west of the centre, among apartment blocks and a later digital museum. What remains are foundations, a sacred house, and the line of the wall. The olive trees are not the original trees. The road from the Dipylon followed the route that is now a city street. Sulla cut the groves in 86 BC. The school in some form lasted until Justinian closed the Athenian schools in AD 529. The pin is the park, not the Acropolis and not a reconstructed lecture hall. The biography that can be walked is a few courses of stone in a neighbourhood that still uses the name.
