あまちゃん (Amachan) | 三陸鉄道久慈駅 Kuji Station — The Orange Roof at the End of the Line

A train rolls into 北三陸駅 and the whole story seems to move with it. In あまちゃん (Amachan), the fictional northern terminus is really 三陸鉄道久慈駅 Kuji Station, the everyday doorway through which Aki, Haruko, Yui, tourists, and townspeople repeatedly leave, return, and begin again. The station is not merely a convenient exterior. The drama’s “North Sanriku Railway” opening ceremony was filmed on the real platform with local residents joining as extras, turning a municipal celebration into one of the show’s most generous images of community. The modest station building, its orange-red trim, a single platform, and the small-town space outside do the emotional work that a grand terminal could not. Departures happen close enough for everyone to see who is waving. Kuji is still the northern gateway of the 三陸鉄道リアス線 Rias Line. Arrive by rail and the difference between screen geography and the real town collapses before you have crossed the station square. Stand back from the platform edge and watch one train complete its run: the ordinary pause between arrival and departure is the rhythm Amachan built an entire hometown around.
