The path winds up Mount Inari, each gate donated by individuals and businesses as offerings to the Shinto god of rice and prosperity. Early morning is the best time to visit, when the light filters through the gates and the crowds are thin. The higher you climb, the quieter it gets, and the more you feel the sacred energy of the mountain.
