Directions
People treat the shop at 1912 Pike Place as the first Starbucks.
It is the oldest surviving store, not the first address.
On 30 March 1971 Jerry Baldwin, Gordon Bowker, and Zev Siegl opened Starbucks at 2000 Western Avenue, in the lower level of the Harbor Heights Hotel, a few blocks from this counter.
The rent was 137.50 dollars a month in 1971 money.
The room sold whole-bean coffee, tea, and spices.
Siegl staffed it.
Baldwin and Bowker kept their day jobs.
The first customer of record, in a HistoryLink account, was Daniel Jack Chasan, who walked in with his daughter when the sandwich board went out.
The Harbor Heights building was torn down in 1976.
The shop moved to 1912 Pike Place inside the Market, where it still trades under design rules that keep the early look.
The founding date belongs to Western Avenue.
The pin belongs to the counter that survived.
The mechanism is the product, not the drink menu later associated with the name.
The first store was a bean merchant modeled on Peet's, not a cafe built around iced drinks.
More than half of later system sales would come from drive-throughs, and most tickets from cold drinks.
None of that was on the 1971 board.
