After exploring the majestic halls of Tōdai-ji, I wandered the serene temple grounds, where Nara's famous deer roamed freely among ancient trees and shimmering ponds. The highlight was Kagami-ike Pond—a tranquil mirror-like reflection pool that captures the sky and temple rooftops, offering a peaceful pause amid the deer-filled paths.
Kagami-ike, meaning "Mirror Pond," has long been part of Tōdai-ji's sacred landscape, symbolizing purity and calm since the Nara period. It's said to reflect the heavens, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere as visitors feed the deer—messengers of the gods in Shinto belief, protected as national treasures. These gentle creatures, over 1,200 strong, wander Nara Park freely, bowing for treats and adding whimsy to this UNESCO World Heritage site.
The deer and pond together create a living tapestry of nature and history, making every stroll here feel timeless.
