Racing | Formula 1 | 1975 Dutch Grand Prix — Hunt Gives Hesketh Its Only Formula 1 Victory

At Circuit Zandvoort’s start-and-finish straight on 22 June 1975, James Hunt began the Dutch Grand Prix from third in the number 24 Hesketh-Ford. Niki Lauda’s Ferrari held pole, with teammate Clay Regazzoni alongside him.

Rain returned as the cars assembled, so the field started on wet-weather tyres. Lauda led through the spray, but the surface began drying almost immediately. Hunt committed early: at the end of lap 7 he left fourth place, stopped for slick tyres, and rejoined nineteenth.

That decision created the race. As the other leaders delayed their stops, Hunt found an increasingly dry line and clear road. When Lauda and Regazzoni finally changed tyres, Hunt emerged in front. Lauda first had to recover third place and pass Jean-Pierre Jarier; after Jarier retired, the Ferrari began closing directly on the Hesketh.

By lap 57 Lauda was on Hunt’s gearbox. Hunt managed slower traffic carefully and kept the Ferrari behind through Zandvoort’s fast bends and the long run toward Tarzanbocht. Lauda entered the final lap close enough to threaten but not close enough to make a pass.

Hunt completed 75 laps in 1 hour 46 minutes 57.400 seconds. The official classification gives Lauda second, 1.060 seconds behind, and Regazzoni third, 55.060 seconds behind. It records no penalty that changed that podium. Lauda set the fastest lap, 1:21.540 on lap 55.

This was Hunt’s first victory in a Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix. It was also Hesketh Racing’s first and only World Championship Grand Prix win, a singular result for the small independent team founded by Alexander Hesketh.

The spatial frame is the 4.226-kilometre permanent circuit used from 1973 through 1979, not Zandvoort’s current 4.259-kilometre layout. The pin marks the historical start-and-finish line shown on the period-layout diagram.
