Military History | Hoylake and West Kirby War Memorial, Grange Hill — Where the Names Were Cut

Grange Hill rises behind West Kirby with the Dee estuary and the sands open to the west, and the monument on its crown stands clear of everything around it. The Earl of Birkenhead unveiled it on 16 December 1922, before a crowd that English Wikipedia and the local press both put at 5,000 — five weeks after another memorial by the same sculptor was unveiled on a station platform at Paddington. Charles Sargeant Jagger made two bronzes for it, set in recesses on opposite faces of the granite. On the west a hooded, robed woman stands on a globe, chains broken at her wrists, a wreath held against her; Historic England's list entry calls her Humanity. On the east a soldier stands in full battle order, gas mask and water bottle on him, helmet pushed back off his head. What surrounds them is names. They run in narrow columns down the panels flanking each figure and on round the base, and the Imperial War Museum's War Memorials Register counts 334 of them for the First World War. Cut into the step below, and legible from outside the railing: AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY THEY LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM, and lower, LET THOSE WHO COME AFTER SEE TO IT THAT THEIR NAMES BE NOT FORGOTTEN. The east face carries the other dedication: IN GRATITUDE TO GOD AND TO THE MEN AND WOMEN FROM THESE PARTS WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR, the dates 1914 to 1919 and 1939 to 1945, and two closing lines that neither register transcribes — THEY WERE A WALL UNTO US BOTH BY NIGHT AND DAY. The same register records a rededication by Viscount Leverhulme on 22 October 1949. Four lines run round the shaft above the bronzes. WHO DIES IF resolves on one face and WHO STANDS IF on the east; the rest carries round the corners. Historic England identifies the lines as Kipling's, from For All We Have and Are, which The Times printed on 2 September 1914. The memorial was listed Grade II* in March 2011.
