While during a break at a conference in Perth, I had the chance to be introduced to some interesting people. One of which was someone who worked in the mining industry in Western Australia, a bit North of Perth. This was a fascinating conversation as the techniques he described which his company used were different than what I had heard about mining support services companies in the U.S. He was passionate about things like rope access services, geotechnical engineering, and ground support services as these were topics he learned around his family dinner table as a kid.

He also discussed regulations in Australia for a company like his (Albatec) versus others in other parts of the country as well as mining regulation differences in nearby countries like New Zealand. I also learned how the services differ slightly depending on the type of mining such as iron ore, gold, or lithium operations as well as the types of people he needs for situations like mining shutdowns.

This wasn't the everyday conversation at a non-mining conference in a major city, so I really enjoyed the chance to learn some new things about his industry. The topics I learned later helped when I had conversations with others in the mining industry so that I wasn't a complete newbie to some of the technical terms and challenges which those businesses face. I even was invited to go to one of the mining sites should I ever be back in the WA area of Australia, so I may take him up on the offer to experience something completely new.
