Hiryukan-kairo (Viewing Sky Path)
philiptong
After visiting Chionji Temple, we continued our Amanohashidate journey to Hiryukan-kairo, the “Viewing Sky Path” at Amanohashidate View Land. The ride up itself felt like part of the adventure, and as the mountain slowly opened into the sky, the famous sandbar appeared below like a ribbon of pine trees stretched between sea and sea.
From the observation deck, the view was breathtaking. Amanohashidate looked like a living postcard—blue water on both sides, soft beaches, green hills, and the long natural bridge curving through the bay with almost unreal beauty.
What made Hiryukan-kairo special was not only the panorama but the sense of play and perspective it offered. The viewing area is known for the classic “matanozoki” pose, where you bend over and look at Amanohashidate upside down to see it as a dragon rising to the heavens, and that playful tradition is part of what makes the site so memorable.
Hiryukan-kairo
Hiryukan-kairo is part of Amanohashidate View Land on Mt. Monju, reached by chairlift or cable car from the south side of Amanohashidate. The viewing path is about 250 meters long, and its highest point reaches about 8.5 meters, giving visitors a wide 360-degree view over the sandbar and Miyazu Bay.
It is one of the best places to appreciate why Amanohashidate is counted among Japan’s Three Scenic Views. The combination of height, sea breeze, forested slopes, and the iconic sandbar creates a calm but unforgettable landscape that changes with the light and season.
