Biography | Roy O. Disney — The Sheltering Hills Plot Across the Freeway from the Studio

People look for Walt at Forest Lawn in Glendale. Roy is not there. He lies on this hillside, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills, Sheltering Hills section, map C01, lot 125. Roy Oliver Disney died of a cerebral hemorrhage late on 20 December 1971, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Burbank. He was seventy-eight. The hospital sits across the street from the studio lot he and Walt had built. A UPI dispatch printed in the New York Times the next day named the cause and the hospital. Two months earlier he had read the dedication plaque in Florida and then retired. The marker here is a flat lawn tablet. It gives the years 1893 to 1971 and the line visitors photograph: He left the world a better place. Edna Francis Disney, whom he married in 1925, is beside him. Walt's resting place is a private garden at the older Forest Lawn in Glendale, not this park. The Burbank studio is a few minutes down the freeway. Quiet hours and posted rules apply. Do not photograph other visitors or step on adjacent tablets. The pin is the public memorial coordinate for lot 125, not the hospital already mapped on Walt's last chapter and not a private house.
