Biography | Frida Kahlo — The Blue House on the Corner of Londres and Allende

People treat Frida Kahlo as a poster and a unibrow. The house is still standing, painted cobalt, at Londres 247 in Colonia del Carmen, Coyoacán. Guillermo Kahlo built it in 1904 around a courtyard in the old colonial pattern. Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo y Calderón was born here on 6 July 1907. She grew up in these rooms, returned after the bus wreck of 17 September 1925, and died upstairs on 13 July 1954. Diego Rivera lived here with her in stretches. In 1937 Leon Trotsky slept behind newly raised walls after he left Norway. The garden lot was bought and the outer walls went blue in that same tightening of the house. After her death Rivera kept the building as she had left it. The museum opened in 1958. What you walk now is not a reconstructed set. The bed with the mirror, the studio, the kitchen, the plaster corsets and the courtyard Judas figures are the inventory of one address. Coyoacán was already a quarter of writers and actors when she was a child. It still is. The pin is the house, not a gallery that later bought a painting.
