The World Learned What Happened on This Street

Yablunska Street runs east to west through the commuter town of Bucha, twenty-five kilometers northwest of Kyiv.

Before the war it was one of the quieter residential roads in the northern part of the town, lined with apple trees and single-family homes.

In late March 2022, as Russian forces withdrew from the Kyiv axis, a Ukrainian territorial defense patrol entered Bucha along this street on April 1.

What they found there and along a handful of nearby roads became public over the following weekend and reshaped how the world understood the war.

Bucha had been under Russian military occupation for thirty-three days, from March 4 to March 30, 2022.

The 234th Air Assault Regiment and other units of the 76th Guards Air Assault Division held the town while heavier armor pushed toward Kyiv.

When those attacks failed and Russian forces pulled back to Belarus, they left behind residents who had been detained, executed in yards and cellars, and in many cases left on the street.

Ukrainian officials by June 13, 2022 counted 1,316 civilian bodies across the reoccupied Kyiv Oblast, more than 650 of them in Bucha itself, most of them killed by gunshot.

Human Rights Watch, the OSCE Moscow Mechanism, and later a United Nations Human Rights Monitoring Mission report documented summary executions, torture, and enforced disappearances during the occupation.

Journalists arrived within hours of the Ukrainian army.

Reuters, AFP, AP, the New York Times, and the Ukrainian media outlet Slidstvo.info published photographs from Yablunska Street on April 2 and April 3.

Satellite imagery from Maxar, correlating body locations with dates while Russian forces still occupied the town, disproved Kremlin claims that the scene had been staged.

The International Criminal Court opened its Bucha investigation within the week.

Ukrainian prosecutors have since filed charges against senior Russian commanders, including Major General Sergei Chubarykin and Colonel General Alexander Chaiko.

Bucha rebuilt.

The apple trees came back.

A memorial to the murdered civilians was inaugurated at the Church of St. Andrew, where hundreds of the dead were first buried in a temporary trench in early April 2022.

The Yablunska Street houses were repaired one by one through 2023.

The name Bucha, like Srebrenica or Mỹ Lai before it, no longer refers only to the town.

It refers to what a modern army did in a commuter suburb, and to the discipline of the evidence that was collected the moment the last checkpoint opened.
