Odesa Held Off the Axis for Seventy-Three Days Here

The Odesa port sits low against the Black Sea, its Potemkin Stairs climbing to a boulevard of plane trees and neoclassical facades.

On August 5, 1941, six weeks into the German assault on the Soviet Union, the Romanian Fourth Army reached the outer perimeter and began the siege.

The city was cut off by land.

Its defenders held the sea.

Odesa was Romania's prize under the terms of its alliance with Hitler.

Marshal Ion Antonescu wanted the port as the capital of a new province, Transnistria.

To take it, the Axis committed roughly 277,000 troops with tanks, heavy artillery, and Luftwaffe support.

Inside the ring, the Soviet Independent Coastal Army under General Georgy Sofronov and later Ivan Petrov, together with a mobilized citizen militia, dug three defensive lines through the loess ridges around the city.

The Black Sea Fleet ran supplies, reinforcements, and evacuees through the port under continuous bombing.

Odesa's residents built tank traps out of tram rails, converted tractors from the local factory into improvised armor plated with ship steel, and moved much of the city's arms production into the limestone catacombs beneath the streets.

Four Romanian assaults failed.

On September 22 a Soviet counter-landing behind the Romanian lines at Grigorievka retook forty square kilometers and captured most of the enemy siege artillery.

The city held for seventy-three days, longer than any Soviet urban defense to that point in the war.

Axis casualties, most of them Romanian, exceeded 90,000.

Soviet military dead ran between 41,000 and 60,000, with civilian losses on top.

On the night of October 14 to 15, 1941, the Black Sea Fleet quietly evacuated the entire garrison and about 350,000 people, soldiers and civilians, to Sevastopol.

The Axis walked into an empty city the next morning and did not know it had gone.

Odesa paid for those seventy-three days across the next thirty months of Romanian occupation, with a Jewish community of nearly 100,000 destroyed in massacres and the ghetto at Bogdanovka.

The Soviet Union named Odesa one of the first four Hero Cities of the war in 1945.

Ukraine reconfirmed the title in 2022, after a second Black Sea war reached the same shore.

The port still runs on the same berths, and the catacombs, quiet, still hold the workshop tables where the city armed itself.
