The Houston Apollos played for one season in the American Association of Professional Baseball, an independent professional minor league circuit which now is a partner league of MLB. The league, however, was not directly affiliated with MLB teams.
The Apollos were comprised of the best players from the lower-level independent professional minor league circuit known as the Pecos League; and the team was operated - and players paid - by the Pecos League as well. This took place for one season due to a delay in a new American Association team's stadium being ready for the 2021 season as the country was coming out of the 2020 pandemic. During that year, only independent professional minor league teams played. No MLB nor affiliated MiLB teams played any form of season, even truncated ones as seen by the independent pro leagues.
The photos came from personal photos or with permission from the Pecos League. The Apollos played all 100 games on the road (aka a "travel team" or "road team") and never even had a "quasi" home game where they got to bat in the bottom of the 9th inning. The team finished last in the league, but was competitive in most games. The players & coaches traveled from Texas (The Depot at Cleburne Station in Cleburne, Texas) all the way to St. Paul MN to Fargo, ND to Jackson, TN (the 2021 home of the Winnipeg Goldeyes team playing there due to Canada's pandemic restrictions continuing). The game featured took place on July 31, 2021 where the Apollos had one of their only shutout victories of the season, defeating the Cleburne Railroaders by a final score of 6-0. David Peterson managed the Apollos the entire season.
After the season, the team scheduled to play in 2021 was ready for the AA's 2022 season; and the Apollos went back to being a professional development & summer development team for the Pecos League playing in South Houston, Texas.
