On our first night in Kota Kinabalu, Chee Keong’s friend Saiful and his wife, who are locals from Sabah, took us to the largest open-air seafood market in the city. Sabah’s reputation for fresh seafood is well-deserved, and the experience exceeded all my expectations.
The market was brimming with an incredible variety of fresh seafood, caught straight from the South China Sea. The sheer size of some of the seafood was astonishing—it was unlike anything I had seen before.
We handpicked an array of seafood and had it cooked in two styles: classic Chinese preparations and authentic Sabahan recipes. Each dish was bursting with flavor, showcasing the freshness and quality of the seafood.
It was an unforgettable meal that perfectly captured the culinary richness of Sabah and set the tone for the rest of our adventure.
