Stepping off the train at Himeji JR Station, I was immediately struck by the city’s welcoming atmosphere. The station opens up onto a broad, tree-lined boulevard—Otemae-dori—that offers a direct, breathtaking view of Himeji Castle perched majestically at the end of the avenue. The sight of the castle’s brilliant white walls rising above the city is truly spectacular and sets the tone for the visit.
Himeji itself is a charming and well-organized township that blends modern conveniences with historical character. The area around the station is lively, featuring a mix of contemporary shopping arcades, cozy cafés, and local eateries serving specialties like Himeji oden and fresh seafood. The city is known for its clean streets, friendly locals, and relaxed pace, making it easy to explore on foot or by bicycle.
