After exploring Shinsekai, we took a train back to Namba Station and finally made our way to one of Osaka’s most iconic destinations—Dotonbori. This vibrant district is a sensory overload in the best way possible, packed with bright neon signs, bustling shops, street performers, and an endless variety of eateries offering everything from takoyaki and okonomiyaki to ramen and crab dishes. The atmosphere is electric, day or night, and it's no wonder Dotonbori is considered the heart of Osaka’s entertainment and food scene.
At the center of it all is the Glico Signboard, perched above Ebisu Bridge. This massive neon billboard features a running man in mid-stride with his arms raised in victory, a symbol of energy and perseverance. Originally installed in 1935 by the confectionery company Glico, it has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Japan. Standing on the bridge, posing with the sign in the background, is a must-do ritual for visitors.
Another local icon nearby is the Kuidaore Taro statue, affectionately known as the Dotonbori clown. Dressed in a red-and-white striped outfit with a drum strapped to his chest, Kuidaore Taro has been delighting visitors since the 1950s. Originally used to promote a now-closed restaurant, he remains a quirky and beloved figure in the area, symbolizing Osaka’s famous motto “kuidaore,” meaning “to eat until you drop.”
We also noticed the Dotonbori River Cruise, a relaxing boat ride that lets you take in the flashing lights and lively atmosphere from the water. It’s a great way to see the area from a different perspective and soak in the neon-drenched beauty of this energetic cityscape.
