Yakiniku at Dotonbori

I continued my exploration of the lively Dotonbori area and came across one of Japan’s most beloved street food staples—grilled beef. The smoky aroma drew me in, and I decided to check out a small, tucked-away food stall called Jidaiya. It had a humble setup, but the food was anything but ordinary.

At Jidaiya, I was offered a selection of beef cuts, including tender slices of wagyu, marbled short ribs, and leaner cuts grilled to perfection right in front of me. Each bite was packed with flavor—juicy, slightly charred on the edges, and seasoned simply to let the quality of the meat shine. It was served with a generous portion of steamed white rice, making it a hearty and satisfying street meal.

Grilled beef, or yakiniku as it's often known in Japan, has a long tradition. While yakiniku typically refers to grilled meat enjoyed in restaurants where diners cook it themselves, the street food version is a quicker, more casual take—still rich in flavor and deeply satisfying. Vendors like Jidaiya specialize in offering a variety of cuts, grilled on open flames or hot plates, often served with dipping sauces such as soy-based tare or ponzu.

To complete the experience, I paired the meal with a cold Asahi beer, the perfect refreshment to wash down the smoky, savory flavors. Sitting at the counter, surrounded by the bustling sounds of Dotonbori, it felt like a true local moment—simple, flavorful, and uniquely Osaka.
