On the morning of my Kobe Bay adventure, I woke up early in Osaka, excited for a day cruise around the bay. Before heading to the cruise center, I made a deliberate stop at a café that perfectly embodies the nostalgia of Japan’s Showa period: Jun.
Stepping into Jun, I was immediately transported back in time. The interior radiated a retro charm—polished wooden floors, sturdy wooden chairs upholstered in patterned fabric, and deep red tables that glowed softly in the morning light. Along one wall, a long bench lined with cushions invited guests to linger, while a framed photograph of a fireworks display over a city skyline hung above a corner filled with fresh lilies and a well-kept fish tank. Metal shelves displayed a collection of books, magazines, and knickknacks, each item adding to the lived-in warmth of the space.
The counter area was equally evocative, with dark wood paneling, a vintage clock, and shelves crowded with jars, coffee canisters, and small memorabilia. Family photos, artwork, and a bouquet of pink flowers added a personal touch, making it clear this was a place cherished by its regulars. The atmosphere was calm and inviting, with the gentle hum of morning routines in the background.
I settled at a table and ordered a classic breakfast set. My meal arrived simply but beautifully presented: a perfectly fried egg on toast, a small bowl of salad, a glass of water, and a cup of strong, aromatic coffee served in a white porcelain cup. The flavors were comforting and familiar, echoing the understated elegance of the surroundings. As I ate, I soaked in the quiet ambiance—the clink of cups, the low murmur of conversation, and the soft background music.
This peaceful start at Jun, a true Showa-era *jun-kissa*, grounded me before the excitement of the Kobe Bay cruise. The retro café experience became a highlight of my day, a reminder of the enduring appeal of Japan’s classic coffee houses and the small joys found in everyday rituals.
