After a fulfilling afternoon exploring the vibrant streets of Nankinmachi and indulging in some truly unforgettable street food, I made my way back to my hotel for a much-needed rest. I was staying at the Kobe Plaza West Hotel, conveniently located along the historic Motomachidōri shopping street—an ideal base for exploring central Kobe on foot.
The hotel is a well-kept 3-star property, clean, modern, and thoughtfully maintained. Like many smaller urban hotels in Japan, the room was compact and efficiently designed, with everything I needed for a comfortable stay. While there wasn’t much of a view from the window—fairly typical for accommodations in busy city districts—the calm and quiet made it a perfect place to unwind.
What truly stood out about the Kobe Plaza West Hotel, however, was an unexpected and stylish detail in its lobby: a gleaming Toyota 2000GT (1969) proudly displayed as part of the hotel’s décor. It was more than just a car—it was a centerpiece, a nod to Japan’s postwar innovation and design legacy.
The Toyota 2000GT is one of the most iconic Japanese sports cars ever produced. Released in limited numbers between 1967 and 1970, the 2000GT was Toyota's answer to European marques like Porsche and Jaguar. With its sleek, aerodynamic lines, pop-up headlights, and polished wood interior, the car combined elegance with performance. Powered by a 2.0L straight-six engine and designed in collaboration with Yamaha, it made a strong statement that Japan could build cars not only for utility but for passion.
Seeing such a rare and beautifully preserved classic in a hotel lobby was a unique and unexpected experience—it added a distinctly Kobe touch to my stay, blending hospitality with heritage. It also reminded me that travel is often defined by these quiet, offbeat moments—the kind that surprise you and make a place feel personal.
Rested and refreshed, I was ready to continue my exploration of Kobe, energized by the comfort of my stay and the inspiration of a piece of automotive history.
