After a pleasant and relaxing train ride on the Hankyu Kobe Line, I arrived at Hanakuma Station, one of the quieter stops on the edge of Kobe’s bustling city center. Stepping off the train, I could feel a change in atmosphere—Kobe has a distinct character compared to Osaka. It’s a city where historic charm meets cosmopolitan elegance, and the streets seem to move at a slightly more relaxed pace.
From Hanakuma Station, I took a short walk toward Motomachidōri, one of Kobe’s most well-known shopping streets. Along the way, the city unfolded in layers—narrow alleys, low-rise buildings with old-world facades, and the distant silhouette of Mt. Rokko hinting at the city’s natural beauty.
Motomachidōri Shopping Street is a long, covered arcade that runs parallel to the more modern Sannomiya area. It’s a charming blend of the past and present, filled with locally owned boutiques, cafes, traditional sweet shops, and modern retailers. The street has been a central part of Kobe’s commercial life since the late 1800s, and even today, it retains a nostalgic feel with its retro-style signs and warm, community vibe.
My hotel was conveniently located right along this bustling shopping street, tucked between small shops and eateries. It felt like I had stepped into the heart of local life. The location was perfect—not only for convenience, but also for the experience. From my doorstep, I could explore Kobe on foot, grab a snack from a bakery, or watch everyday life unfold as locals shopped for groceries or met for coffee.
Settling into my room, I felt excited to begin my exploration of Kobe—with Motomachidōri as my starting point, I knew the day would be full of discovery and local flavor.
