Meriken Park – BE KOBE and a City’s Resilience

Later in the day, I set out from my hotel for a peaceful walk toward one of Kobe’s most iconic waterfront landmarks—Meriken Park. Located just a short stroll from the Motomachi area, the park sits along Kobe’s scenic harbor, offering open space, ocean views, and a mix of modern art and deep historical reflection.

At the heart of the park is the striking white “BE KOBE” monument—a bold, minimalist sculpture that has quickly become a symbol of local pride and a must-visit photo spot. The sign stands tall with the dramatic backdrop of the Oriental Hotel, the futuristic curves of the Kobe Maritime Museum, and the shimmering waters of the harbor. When I arrived, the evening light was just starting to soften, casting long shadows and bringing a warm glow to the whole scene.

The BE KOBE sign was installed in 2017 to commemorate the city’s resilience and renewal following the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. It’s more than just a slogan—it’s a declaration of identity, community spirit, and the will to rebuild. Locals and tourists alike gather around it, taking photos and quietly reflecting on how far the city has come.

Just steps away from the sign is a solemn space—the Earthquake Memorial Park, which preserves a section of the damaged waterfront exactly as it was left after the disaster. Cracked pavement, twisted railings, and informative plaques provide a sobering contrast to the modern skyline, reminding visitors of the devastation that struck the city in the early hours of January 17, 1995.

As I stood near the sign, looking out over Kobe Bay, I felt a deep sense of calm and respect. The area around Meriken Park blends Kobe’s modern elegance with its historical scars in a thoughtful, beautiful way. The sound of seagulls overhead, families walking along the promenade, and the gentle breeze from the sea all created a perfect moment of reflection.

The BE KOBE monument wasn’t just a landmark—it was a message. One that captured both the heartbreak and the hope of a city that continues to rise with quiet strength.
