Dotonbori Retro Pubs and Takoyaki

I couldn’t leave Dotonbori without trying takoyaki from one of its famous street stalls. The line was long, but totally worth it—after all, this is the heart of Osaka, and takoyaki here is a must. The freshly grilled octopus balls were piping hot, crispy on the outside and creamy inside, topped with savory sauce, mayo, seaweed, and dancing bonito flakes. It was everything I imagined and more.

Later in the evening, we stumbled upon one of Dotonbori’s many hidden gems—a retro-style bar tucked away in one of the narrow alleyways behind the main strip. Dotonbori isn’t just about neon lights and big-name shops; there’s a whole network of cozy izakayas, themed bars, and intimate snack bars hidden in the backstreets, often marked only by a tiny sign or lantern.

We found ourselves in a retro pub with vintage decor and a welcoming local vibe. It had a small karaoke setup, and the girls were quick to grab the mic for a few fun songs. I kicked back with a cold Asahi beer, enjoying the laid-back atmosphere and the lively company. It was a perfect way to wind down after a day of sightseeing—an authentic slice of Osaka nightlife that tourists often miss.
