My visit to Uji felt like stepping into a place where nature, literature, and centuries of history still quietly live together. Standing on Uji-bashi Bridge, I looked out over the broad Uji River as the clouds moved slowly across the sky, and the whole town seemed wrapped in a calm, timeless atmosphere.

Uji Bridge is more than just a crossing. Historical accounts say the first bridge here was built in 646 by a monk from Nara, and over the centuries it became one of the most important gateways into the Kyoto region. It has been rebuilt many times, but its significance has never faded, because this spot connected travel, trade, defense, and daily life along the river.

The Uji River itself has shaped the identity of the town. It served as an important water route in the region, but it was also known for its fast flow and destructive floods, which meant bridges had to be rebuilt repeatedly and the river often became the setting for conflict. At the same time, the river’s misty, humid environment helped create the conditions that made Uji famous for tea, especially Uji matcha and sencha.

What makes Uji so memorable is that it is not only historical, but deeply literary and cultural as well. Uji appears in classic Japanese literature such as The Tale of Genji, and the area is closely linked with elegant Heian-era court culture and the heritage of Byodo-in and Ujigami Shrine. Even today, you can still feel that old connection between the river, the bridge, tea culture, and the refined spirit of the town.

Looking at the river from the bridge, I could understand why Uji has been admired for so long. It is a place where the landscape itself feels like part of Japan’s history, and where even a simple moment on the bridge carries the weight of centuries.
