On the morning of 20 February 2014, protesters advanced up Instytutska Street from Maidan Nezalezhnosti, Kyiv's Independence Square, after three months of demonstrations against President Viktor Yanukovych.

Security forces and snipers opened fire.

By midday, dozens of protesters had been shot dead on this street, the bloodiest day of what Ukrainians now call the Revolution of Dignity.

Around a hundred protesters were killed in the revolution's final week, most of them on 20 February.

Ukrainians remember them as the Heavenly Hundred.

Within two days, Yanukovych had fled the capital and parliament voted to remove him from office.

The upper stretch of Instytutska Street has been renamed the Alley of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, lined with photographs and memorials at the spots where individual protesters fell.

Since 2015, 20 February has been a national day of remembrance in Ukraine.
