Strolling through Sogenchi Teien after lunch was the perfect way to soak in the atmosphere of Tenryu-ji. It’s no wonder this garden has been treasured for nearly 700 years; designed by the legendary Zen master Muso Soseki, it remains one of the most stunning examples of a classic Japanese strolling pond garden.

The garden is famous for its use of shakkei, or "borrowed scenery," where the nearby mountains of Arashiyama and Kameyama are incorporated into the garden's design to create a sense of vast, seamless depth. Standing by the edge of Sogenchi Pond, I felt how the water acted as a giant mirror, reflecting the sky and the surrounding trees, while the carefully placed rocks symbolized spiritual themes, like the legend of a carp ascending a waterfall to become a dragon.kaffetid+4

What made the stroll so special was how peaceful it felt to walk the level path around the pond, discovering the garden from different perspectives as I moved. It’s easy to see why it was the first site in Japan to be named a "Site of Special Historic and Scenic Importance"—the balance between the meticulously placed stones, the calm water, and the lush greenery creates a timeless space that truly embodies Zen harmony.
