Himeji Castle seemed to go on forever as we wandered through its vast courtyards, each corner revealing another piece of history. My guide continued to share fascinating stories, and at one point she encouraged me to look up at the rooftops. That’s when I noticed the striking, unusual ornaments perched at each end of the roof ridges—something I probably would have missed on my own.
She explained these fierce-looking figures are called shachi or shachihoko. At first glance, they looked to me like mythical creatures with the body of a giant fish and the head of a tiger or dragon. My guide told me that in Japanese folklore, shachi were believed to have the power to summon water, which made them important symbols of protection—especially against fire, which was the greatest enemy of wooden castles like Himeji.
The shachi atop Himeji Castle’s rooftops are not only functional in their symbolic duty, but they’re also beautiful and ornate. Some of them, especially the pair crowning the main keep, are absolutely massive—measuring over two meters long! Made from black tiles or even gilded copper, they really stand out against the castle’s bright white plaster and sweeping roofs.
Beyond their mythical protective role, my guide said the shachi were also an expression of status and power for the castle’s lord. The grander and more prominent the shachi, the greater the prestige of the family inhabiting the castle.
As I looked up at those glimmering guardians, I felt like I was seeing a perfect blend of art, folklore, and history come together in one striking detail. It’s small moments like this—learning the secret stories behind what’s above your head—that make wandering Himeji Castle such an unforgettable, eye-opening experience.
