Below is an excerpt from Yu-kai Chou's "10,000 Hours of Play":
"When Sun Yat-sen turned [thirteen], he was sent to Honolulu in Hawaii to join his older brother. During this time, Sun observed his brother's success as a sugar planter and farm equipment dealer. Sun's exposure to Western governance contrasted heavily with the Qing Dynasty's corrupted monarchy rule back home. There, the seeds of revolutionary thought were quietly sowed."
In September 1879, thirteen-year-old Sun Yat-sen enrolled at Iolani School in Honolulu, joining his older brother Sun Mei who had become a successful sugar planter known as "the King of Maui." One of only ten Chinese boys at the school, Sun excelled so greatly that he graduated in 1882 with a second prize in English grammar, presented by King David Kalakaua himself. It was here that Sun first experienced Western democratic systems — a stark contrast to the corrupt Qing Dynasty back home. These observations planted the seeds of revolutionary thought that would change China forever.
