Visiting Nishiki Market in Kyoto felt like walking through the living history of the city’s food culture. The market has roots stretching back centuries, beginning as a fish-selling district made possible by Kyoto’s cool underground water, and it was officially recognized in 1615 before growing into the famous food destination now known as “Kyoto’s kitchen”. As I wandered through the crowded lanes, I loved the mix of old tradition and everyday energy, with vendors preparing food fresh in front of me and the whole market buzzing with movement and smell. It felt both historic and lively at the same time.
I tried so many foods along the way: grilled eel, matcha sweets, octopus skewers, sashimi tuna, tempura, fried seafood, scallops, oysters, crab sticks, shrimp, and other skewered seafood items. The variety was incredible, and each stop added a new flavor to the experience. Nishiki Market was more than a place to eat — it was a memorable taste of Kyoto’s heritage, from its long merchant history to its modern street-food charm.
