After arriving at Sannomiya on such a beautiful, lively day, I decided to walk to Kobe Kitano, one of the city’s most famous and atmospheric districts. The stroll from Sannomiya to Kitano took about 15 minutes, gradually leading me up gentle slopes toward the foot of the Rokko Mountains. As I walked, the urban energy of central Kobe began to give way to quieter, tree-lined streets and an air of old-world charm.
Kitano is renowned for its unique blend of Japanese and Western influences, a legacy of Kobe’s history as an international port city. When Kobe’s port opened to the world in 1868, the Kitano area became home to foreign merchants, diplomats, and businesspeople. They built grand Western-style mansions—known as *ijinkan*—that still stand today as a testament to the city’s cosmopolitan past.
Wandering through Kitano, I was surrounded by these beautifully preserved historic residences, each with its own character and story. Among the highlights is the iconic Weathercock House, a striking red-brick mansion topped with a distinctive weathercock weathervane. Built by a German trader in the early 1900s, it’s become a beloved symbol of the district, with interiors that blend German architectural styles and evoke the feel of a medieval castle. Nearby, the Moegi House stands out with its elegant pale green exterior and Art Nouveau details, originally built for the American Consul General in 1903. From its second-floor balcony, there are splendid views over the city and port.
Another must-see is the Uroko House, named for its exterior covered in natural slate tiles that resemble fish scales. This mansion, the first to open to the public, features regal antique furnishings and a collection of fine Western porcelain. The adjacent observation gallery houses artwork by Matisse and Utrillo, and from the upper floors, I enjoyed panoramic views of Kobe’s cityscape and harbor.
Kitano isn’t just about history—the area is dotted with stylish cafés, boutique shops, and art galleries, many housed within these historic buildings. The atmosphere is relaxed yet sophisticated, with a sense of stepping back in time to an era when Kobe was a true crossroads of East and West. As I wandered the picturesque streets, I passed the Kitano Tenman Shrine, offering tranquil spots and sweeping views over Kobe and Osaka Bay.
Exploring Kitano was like discovering a different side of Japan—one shaped by international exchange and creativity. The district’s blend of Western architecture, Japanese hospitality, and artistic flair made it a highlight of my Kobe adventure, perfect for a leisurely stroll and a deeper appreciation of the city’s rich cultural tapestry.
