After checking into my hotel and leaving my luggage safely in the room, I headed straight back out to explore the vibrant streets of Kobe’s Nankinmachi—one of Japan’s most famous and historic Chinatowns. Located just a short walk from Motomachidōri, Nankinmachi immediately drew me in with its bold red gates, lantern-lined streets, and the irresistible aroma of freshly cooked street food wafting through the air.
Nankinmachi is a compact yet bustling district, founded in the 19th century by Chinese merchants who settled in Kobe after the port was opened to foreign trade. Over the years, it has grown into a colorful cultural hotspot, known for its lively atmosphere, ornate Chinese architecture, and most of all—its delicious street food.
As I wandered through the crowded lanes, the energy was infectious. Locals and tourists alike lined up at small food stalls and take-out windows, while vendors called out their specials in a mix of Japanese and Chinese. Red and gold decorations hung from every corner, and the rhythmic sound of cooking woks and cheerful chatter filled the air.
I couldn’t resist sampling some of the offerings. I started with a few dumplings, their crispy bottoms and juicy pork fillings packed with flavor. Next came siu mai—plump and fragrant steamed pork dumplings that melted in my mouth. And of course, I had to try a warm, fluffy bao (steamed bun), filled with savory meat and seasoned just right. Every bite was comforting and rich, a perfect fusion of Chinese culinary tradition with a Japanese street food twist.
Standing in the heart of Nankinmachi, nibbling on freshly made treats under hanging lanterns, I felt completely immersed in a unique cultural corner of Kobe. It was one of those travel moments that stays with you—not just for the flavors, but for the atmosphere, the warmth of the people, and the way the past and present come together in such a vibrant way.
