Arriving at Kitanocho Square, I found myself in one of the most iconic spots in Kobe’s historic Kitano district. The square itself is a welcoming public space, perched partway up the hillside, and offers a moment to rest and take in the unique atmosphere of the area. What immediately caught my eye was the strong influence of German architecture—most notably the striking Weathercock House (Kazamidori-no-yakata), which stands proudly at the rear of the plaza. Its red brick façade, exposed beams, and the iconic weathercock atop the roof make it an unmistakable symbol of Kitano. Built in 1909 for German trader Gottfried Thomas, the house’s design, with its dark half-timbering and white plaster upper stories, radiates a distinctly Germanic mood and is now a nationally recognized Important Cultural Property.
In the square, I also noticed elegant statues, including a bronze musician, which seem to gaze out over Kobe, adding a touch of artistry and history to the setting[1]. The elevated position of Kitanocho Square means you get a lovely view over the city, with the modern skyline framed by the lush greenery of the mountain slopes behind.
As I explored, a sign reading “Rhenania” caught my attention at the entrance to the Weathercock House. “Rhenania” is the Latinized name for the Rhineland region in Germany, a nod to the original owner’s home and heritage. The ornate wooden fence and trellised gateway bearing this name further emphasized the German influence and the cosmopolitan spirit that defines Kitano.
Nearby, I found a ticketing booth—one of several in the area—where visitors can purchase single or combination tickets to tour the various historic *ijinkan* houses. These booths are convenient for planning your route, and combination tickets offer access to multiple residences at a discounted price, making it easy to explore the rich tapestry of Western architecture and history throughout Kitano.
Kitanocho Square, with its blend of German architectural elegance, public art, and panoramic city views, truly captures the international legacy and charm that make this district such a highlight of Kobe.
