After leaving the temple grounds, we continued our stroll, guided gently by our tour leader, until we entered a tranquil Japanese garden tucked quietly within the Shitennoji complex. The moment we stepped in, it felt as though we had crossed into a sacred, timeless space.
Two serene ponds lay at the heart of the garden—Ruriko no Pond and Gokuraku no Pond. Between them stood a small island, accessible only in the imagination, symbolizing a sacred space untouched by the noise of the world. The southern side, near the entrance, is known as the “Pond of Paradise,” representing the Pure Land of Buddhist cosmology. At the center of the island rests the Amida Sanzon Stone, a symbolic tribute to Amida Buddha and his two attendant bodhisattvas—a stone arrangement embodying spiritual salvation and peaceful rebirth.
By the pond sits the elegant Octagonal Pavilion, its graceful symmetry mirrored in the still water below. In summer, the scene transforms: lotus flowers bloom across the surface, their broad green leaves spreading like open hands in meditation. In Buddhism, the lotus is a symbol of purity and enlightenment, and in this setting, it seemed as though nature itself was engaged in quiet contemplation.
The atmosphere was deeply Zen—subtle, balanced, and intentional. Every element, from the arrangement of stones to the ripples in the pond, invited reflection. The sound of wind rustling through leaves, the occasional flutter of a bird, and the soft crunch of gravel underfoot created a meditative rhythm. It wasn’t just a garden—it was a living expression of inner peace, a paradise carved out in the middle of the city.
