I visited the Osaka Mint Museum and learned how Japan’s coinage developed over time, from early forms of currency to the carefully made modern yen coins I use today. The exhibits showed how the mint turned raw metal into finished currency, and I was especially interested in the stages of production, from coin blanks and washed blanks to fully completed coins. Seeing the museum’s collection of medals, commemorative issues, and historic machinery made the visit feel like a lesson in craftsmanship as much as history. It was impressive to see how much care goes into every coin, and how the mint has helped shape Japan’s monetary identity over the years.

Coinage history
The museum’s displays trace a long arc of Japanese coinage, including ancient Chinese-influenced money systems and early Japanese cash coins with square holes. Those round coins with a central hole became a familiar design in East Asia for centuries, and the museum’s exhibits help explain how metal money spread and changed across the region. Later displays show the development of Japan’s modern system, including yen coins and official mint products such as proof sets and commemorative medals. The museum also shows the transition from traditional hand production to more industrial minting methods, highlighting the technical side of coin manufacturing.
