When my family and I first purchased our new home in Taichung, Taiwan, we were filled with excitement and anticipation for the future. The house was located in a beautiful garden park community, with ponds, rivers, and an abundance of natural life. My two daughters, Symphony and Harmony, were thrilled at the prospect of living in such a serene and peaceful environment.
But the home was large but narrow. To make the narrowness more attractive, I enlisted the help from one my best friends and world-class architectural designer, PH Chen, to design the renovation. His vision was stunning, and we were all excited to get started.
However, since he was based in London, he couldn't supervise the construction, which led to some unexpected challenges. He connected us to another famous architectural designer in Taichung to help with the localization of the design, but unfortunately, the new architect too couldn't personally supervise the construction. We had to find local workers to build it ourselves.
Because of the various technicalities of the design, the design was already difficult to create. But my wife Angel also wanted to invest in the highest quality materials that didn't have questionable chemicals and electric/water systems that were long-lasting for 20 years (solar, holistic waterproofing, electric car compatible). We decided to find special talent for various roles, which turned out to be highly frictional. The workers didn't want to work together, and when something went wrong, they blamed each other. This created a lot of tension and frustration, and it made the renovation process much more challenging than we had anticipated.
Despite all of these challenges, we remained committed to our vision, and we continued to push forward with the renovation. We wanted to create a home that was both beautiful and functional, and we believed that it was worth the effort to achieve that goal.
At the end, the project took almost three years to complete. It was a frustrating and difficult process, and there were times when we wondered if we would ever finish. However, we remained determined, and we continued to work with our team of builders to make our vision a reality.
The renovation project taught us many valuable lessons about the importance of communication, collaboration, and perseverance. We learned that building a dream home is not an easy task, but it is worth the effort when you see the final result in the next memory on Metablox.
