Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari, the deity of rice, prosperity, and business success, and is famous for its hillside path lined with thousands of vermilion torii gates that create a vivid tunnel leading up Mount Inari.
Walking through the torii tunnel, like in your rain‑soaked photos, you pass under gate after gate so closely spaced that the outside world almost disappears, leaving only the orange glow of the wood, the wet stone path, and the black calligraphy of the donors’ names and dates. Each gate has been donated by a person or company, and those inscriptions running down the posts in your pictures record who gave the gate and when, turning the whole corridor into a living register of gratitude and hopes for good fortune.
At the lower entrance, the large torii framed by forest and crowds of umbrellas marks the start of the pilgrimage route, flanked by stone fox statues wearing red bibs; foxes are considered Inari’s messengers and often hold a key or jewel in their mouths. As you climb, the path branches and curves, and your photos show how the gates twist around bends so the line of orange seems endless, especially striking on a rainy day when the wet wood deepens in color and the fallen leaves stick to the glistening stones.
The shrine grounds also include prayer halls and smaller sub‑shrines, like the one in your last image where school groups and visitors gather with umbrellas, paying respects, ringing bells, and hanging ema wooden plaques to write wishes. Even when it is crowded and difficult to capture an empty corridor, the rain and umbrellas add their own atmosphere, emphasizing that Fushimi Inari is not just a photo spot but a working spiritual site constantly filled with worshippers and travelers moving through its thousand torii gates.
