Emergency Preparedness Lessons From Power Outage Lasting Over 12 Days In Niagra County NY

In 2012 there was a power outage in Niagra County NY which lasted roughly 12 days in a blackout situation: https://www.utilitydive.com/news/the-10-longest-power-outages-of-2012/92756
While many preppers and others who take disaster preparedness seriously are considering SHTF situations, they often forget to prepare for situations like natural disasters and long-term power outages / blackouts. There are many considerations to address during any time when power is out for that long:
- Security concerns such as looting, burglaries, assaults and more
- Spoiled food
- Sanitation concerns due to spoiled food such as rodents, flies, mosquitoes and more
- Sanitation systems not working properly due to lack of power
- Medical concerns such as CPAP machines not working, not being able to refrigerate medicines, and more
- Lack of communication such as being unable to recharge smart phones, not able to recharge walkie talkies or other radios, etc.
- Health concerns due to lack of air conditioning in the summer, or not even able to run fans to adequately cool yourself and loved ones
- Concerns for pets
- Damage to property due to riots or gangs
- Boredom due to lack of television, radio or other entertainment
- Unable to work especially jobs requiring computers
- Possible traffic concerns if lights don't work
- Health concerns for those in assisted living facilities, hospitals, and similar living situations
- Many other challenges
While being without power for that long in modern society can be detrimental on a lot of levels. However there is some intelligent education which is available by Steven Harris. He wrote the book "Sunshine To Dollars" and "Surviving The Blackout of 2003".
He has several training courses which can help you prepare to address several of the above-listed concerns as well as additional topics.
